Water Stains on Wood

Water Stains on Wood

Water stains on wood can be a frustrating issue, whether you are dealing with a plank table, a terrace, or other wooden surfaces. These stains occur when moisture penetrates the wood’s surface, leaving marks that can be difficult to remove. Fortunately, oil treatment can be an effective method to prevent future damage. On this page, you can learn much more about how you can use our interior and exterior wood oils to prevent future water stains.

What Are Water Stains on Wood?

Water stains occur when liquid penetrates the wood’s surface and alters its structure and colour. Depending on how deeply the water has soaked into the wood, stains can appear either light or dark. Light stains often appear when moisture has affected only the upper layer of the wood, while darker stains can indicate that the water has penetrated deeper into the material.

Removing Water Stains on Wood

The most effective and long-lasting method for removing water stains on wood is to treat the affected area with one of our Rubio Monocoat stain removers, followed by an oil treatment. This strengthens the wood and helps protect it against future spills.

We recommend using our interior oil Oil Plus 2C or our exterior oil DuroGrit. Both oils are enriched with environmentally friendly and effective ingredients that protect and nourish the wood. With oil treatment, you ensure that your wooden surfaces maintain their durability and remain more resistant to future spills.

Preventing Water Stains with Oil Treatment

Regular oil treatment protects wooden surfaces against moisture and extends their lifespan. Especially for exposed surfaces such as dining tables, kitchen worktops, and terraces, it is essential to maintain protection over time.

To ensure even and effective protection with our oils, proper preparation is crucial. Once the water stains have been treated with a stain remover, and the surface has been cleaned from dust and dirt using our Rubio Monocoat wood soaps, it is time for the oil treatment. We recommend applying the oil evenly with a wide brush and working in smaller sections. This makes it easier to wipe away excess oil as you go.

Whether you choose our interior or exterior oil, only one coat is required. Both oils are developed with a special molecular bonding technology, meaning that a single layer is enough to achieve optimal protection. Once the oil has been applied, allow it to dry and cure for approximately 24 hours. After a few days, the surface can be cleaned again using our wood soap.

Interior Wood Protection Against Water Stains

Indoor wooden furniture and surfaces require protective oil treatment to minimise the risk of water stains. For interior wood, we recommend Oil Plus 2C, made with environmentally friendly and food-contact compliant ingredients. This means the oil can safely be used on everything from kitchen worktops and dining tables to indoor furniture, floors, and more. To further prevent future spills, we also recommend using placemats and coasters to protect wooden surfaces as much as possible.

Terrace Wood Protection Against Water Stains

Wooden terraces are exposed to changing weather conditions and therefore require oil treatment to withstand rain, sleet, and the risk of water stains. Here, we recommend our exterior oil DuroGrit, which contains environmentally friendly and effective ingredients that ensure the right protection for the wood against the unpredictable outdoor climate. We recommend repeating the treatment at least once a year to preserve the wood’s strength and appearance.

In Summary

Removing water stains on wood can be achieved by using one of our stain removers followed by a protective oil treatment. This method not only restores the appearance of the wood but also extends its lifespan and helps protect against future moisture damage.

Regular oil treatment is ultimately the key to keeping wooden surfaces beautiful and resistant for many years to come.
